Giveaways
Honeypots
A fake giveaway that quietly tags the people who enter everything, so they stop winning real ones.
Some accounts enter every giveaway in every server, never engage otherwise, and exist to farm prizes. A honeypot is bait that identifies them for you.
It looks exactly like a normal giveaway. You write the prize and the wording yourself. The difference is what happens when someone clicks Enter: instead of entering, they are quietly given a role of your choosing, and nobody is ever drawn.
Point that role at your default blocked roles list and those accounts have removed themselves from every future giveaway in your server, without you lifting a finger.
Honeypots are a Premium feature.
Setting one up#
The whole thing is two settings, but the second one is the one people forget.
- Make the role. Something like
@Giveaway Blocked. It needs no permissions and no colour. Members should not be able to tell they have it, so put it low in your role list. - Create the honeypot. On the Giveaways page, fill in the form as if it were real, then tick Make this a honeypot and pick the role.
- Leave "Also add it to the default blocked roles" ticked. This is the step that makes it work. Without it the role gets assigned and nothing else happens.
That is it. Write convincing bait, post it somewhere your regulars will not be confused by it, and let it sit.
Writing good bait#
The trap only catches people who enter without thinking, so it should look attractive and slightly too good:
- Name a prize that is desirable but not so absurd it reads as a joke.
- Do not add entry requirements. You want the careless entries, and requirements filter them out.
- Avoid announcing it in a channel where your genuine members will feel tricked. A dedicated giveaways channel is ideal, since the people who read every giveaway post are exactly who you are looking for.
What your members see#
Nothing unusual. Clicking Enter shows the same "You're entered!" confirmation a real giveaway shows, and only they can see it. If it said anything else the trap would be pointless.
What you see#
- Everyone who clicked is recorded, exactly like a real giveaway's entrant list, so you can review the list on the dashboard.
- Zira posts a note in your role log channel each time someone is caught, if you have one set.
- The honeypot is hidden from
/giveaway list, so running that command does not give the trap away. - On the dashboard it is clearly marked with a 🍯 and a Honeypot badge, so your staff are never confused about which is which.
Undoing a mistake#
Someone genuine will occasionally click. Remove the role from them in Discord and they are immediately eligible again, because the block is checked at the moment they click Enter, not stored on the giveaway.
Default blocked roles#
This list lives in the Giveaway settings card on the Giveaways page and, like honeypots, is a Premium feature. It applies to every giveaway in the server, including ones that are already running. That is deliberate: adding a role there instantly excludes those members everywhere, rather than only affecting giveaways you create afterwards.
It is useful on its own, with no honeypot involved. Any role you use for people who abuse giveaways, or who are muted, can go in there once instead of being re-added to every giveaway you create.
Blocked roles are checked when someone clicks Enter and again when the giveaway is drawn. Someone who entered legitimately and later picked up a blocked role will not win.
