Troubleshooting
Emoji problems
Fix "Discord did not recognize an emoji" and "Discord rejected the message content" errors.
The errors#
Discord did not recognize an emoji on the message.
Discord rejected the message content (usually a custom emoji).
I can't use this emoji.
Why it happens#
Three common causes, in order of likelihood:
- The custom emoji was deleted, or it belongs to a server Zira is not in. A custom emoji only works if it still exists somewhere Zira can see it.
- Zira is missing Use External Emojis in the channel, which is needed for any emoji that lives in a different server.
- The emoji was pasted as text from another app and is not a real Discord emoji. Some emoji from phones or websites look right but are not in Discord's picker.
The fix#
- Pick the emoji from Discord's own emoji picker while setting up, rather than pasting it.
- For custom emoji, prefer emoji uploaded to this server. They keep working as long as the emoji exists.
- If you need emoji from another server, give Zira Use External Emojis in the channel, and make sure Zira is also a member of the server the emoji comes from.
- If the emoji was deleted, edit the button or reaction on the dashboard and choose a new one.
Tip
Standard emoji (the yellow faces and symbols everyone has) never break. When an emoji does not matter much, they are the safe choice.
